Beech family, Fagaceae
Origin: the central and north-eastern part of the U.S.A.
Habitat in the original area: floodplains and coastal forests (short periods of floods)
Habitus: This tree grows up to the height of around 15–25 metres. Its crown is broadly conical, its lower branches are hanging down. The bark is grey-black and smooth; it is shallowly fissured in older specimens.
Leaf: The leaf is deeply lobed, shiny on both sides, with rusty trichomes along the main vein on the underside. Its colour changes from fresh green into red to brown in autumn.
Bloom, fruit: The fruit is an acorn enclosed in a flat cup.
Interesting facts: The tree is planted as a solitary plant for its decorative leaves. It tolerates polluted environments; and therefore it is suitable for planting in urban areas.
