Origin: The Far East (from the Kuril Islands to Japan, Korea and China)
Habitat in the original area: scrubs and light forests on mountain slopes and in valleys
Habitus: A shrub or small tree growing up to 5 metres; its twigs are of a dark brown to a grey-brown colours.
Leaf: The petiolate leaves are oppositely arranged, and they are of an ovate to elliptical shape with a serrated edge.
Bloom, fruit: The inflorescence is a pyramidal panicle up to 26 centimetres long and consisting of sterile and fertile blooms. The sterile (infertile) blooms are larger, quadrangular and white. The fertile (fruitful) blooms are small and have white petals. This woody plant blooms from July to September, its fruits are capsules.
Interesting facts: As an ornamental shrub, this plant is grown in many cultivars.
