This park is located on the northern edge of the historical centre of Hradec Králové. In its northern part, the park is bordered by the Československé armády Street, in its southern part there are terraces and a system of retaining walls, which are the remains of the original fortifications. Since 1987, this park has been an urban heritage reservation, in which there is a monument to Jan Žižka of Trocnov, and on their eastern edge there is a bronze statue of Ladislav Jan Pospíšil.
The Žižkovy sady park was created in 1905–1906 on the site of a military training ground. Thanks to the activities of the Landscaping Guild, most of the trees and shrubs were planted here. The work on the park’s design was commissioned to František Thomayer, at that time a very well-known garden architect. The park has typical features of a French garden and is divided into three parts, each of which has characteristic features different from the other two.
The main part has a central sunny rectangle and a sunken grassy parterre with a central water feature. The grassy parterre has been enriched with flower beds and wooden species planted in a symmetrical way. The peripheral part of the park was designed for planting groups of wooden species or solitary trees. The paths around the parterre are of a promenade character.
The second part of the park consists of terraces and retaining city walls, over which several staircases lead to the historical part of the city, in which you can visit not only historical monuments, but also numerous cultural facilities, such as theatres and galleries, restaurants and other tourist attractions.
The third part of the park, which had not been a part of it until the second half of the 20th century, makes up approximately one third of its total area, and it was originally intended for the public, especially for holding school fairs.
