Yellow Cedar (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis)

Origin: eastern North America

Habitat in the original area: damp places, peat bogs

Habitus: A tree growing to the height up to 35 metres. Its bark is grey, thick and irregularly furrowed; its branches hang down. 

Leaf: Up to 2.5 millimetres long scale-like leaves are blunt or shortly pointed at the top. 

Bloom, fruit: Male cones are grey-brown; female cones are dark reddish-brown, asymmetrical and with a bent tip. They ripen in the first year and open immediately to release winged seeds. 

Interesting fact: Numerous cultivars have been grown, differing in leaf colours and height. It can also be grown as a bonsai.
