Habitat in the original area: moist forests, around watercourses
Habitus: A shrub or tree growing up to 25 metres, its bark is brown-grey.
Leaf: Petiolate leaves grow alternately on the branches. Their blade is ovate, up to 12 centimetres long, and it has an asymmetrical base and a pointed tip. The edge is serrated. The upper side is rough and glabrous, the veins on the lower side are covered with trichomes.
Bloom, fruit: It blooms from March to May with light green blossoms growing in the axils of the upper leaves. The fruit is a round orange to dark blue drupe with a diameter of up to 2 centimetres.
Interesting fact: It is grown in parks and gardens in several cultivars differing in the shape of the leaves and the colour of the blooms. In the given location, an entire alley is planted with this species.
