Thicket Creeper (Parthenocissus inserta)

Grape family, Vitaceae

Origin: North America

Habitat in the original area: shrubs and forest edges

Habitus: A woody liana climbing along the substrate, to which it attaches by tendrils, not by suction cups.

Leaf: The compound five-lobed shiny leaves with a roughly serrated edge are dark green. In autumn, however, they turn crimson red.

Bloom, fruit: Small green blossoms are arranged in spikes and bloom from June to July. The blossoms develop into small dark blue berries with a frosty surface.

Interesting fact: It is often confused with the related species Virginia Creeper (P. quinquefolia). At the first sight, the species are indistinguishable. However, Virginia Creeper has a grey underside, has suckers at the ends of its tendrils, and its fruits are shiny, their surface is not frosty.
