Cypress family, Cupressaceae
Origin: the west of the U.S.A.
Habitat in the original area: coniferous forests
Habitus: A tree with a narrow, conical crown and with a bent top. It grows to the height of 30–50 metres.
Leaf: The leaves are scaly, along almost the entire length pressed to the twig, only at the end they stand out briefly. The lateral scales are longer than the central ones. They have a vivid green colour and a delicate white pattern on the downside.
Bloom, fruit: The male cones are eye-catching dark purple, female ones have a blue-green colour. The cones are green at the beginning, then they gradually turn brown and woody. They consist of 8 seed scales, which have a short-pointed growth on the surface.
Interesting fact: In its homeland, this tree is threatened by the spread of root rot.
