Oriental Spruce (Picea orientalis)

Origin: Caucasus, mountains in Asia Minor 

Habitat in the original area: foothill forests and mountain forests

Habitus: A tree 15–30 metres tall, with a dense, conical crown. Branches reach almost to the ground. 

Leaf: The buds are red-brown without resin. Needles are shorter than 1 centimetre, dark green and noticeably shiny on the surface. Needles´ cross-section is quadrangular. The twigs are densely covered with needles. 

Bloom, fruit: Male cones have red pollen in spring. Narrow, cylindrical cones grow downwards from the twigs. Seed scales are rounded at the top. 

Interesting fact: The root system is flat and only shallowly placed in the soil. Therefore, this species suffers from frequent uprooting.
