Rugosa Rose (Rosa rugosa)

Origin: the Far East, Korea, Japan, northern China

Habitat in the original area: river valleys and coasts

Habitus: It is a compact, low shrub that grows by underground shoots. The branches are strong, not very flexible and covered with many spines which are green, of various sizes and covered with trichomes. 

List: The leaves are composed of 7–11 elliptical leaflets. Their surface is roughly wrinkled. They are dark green and shiny on the upper side, the lower side is covered with short trichomes. At the top they are elongated to a tip.

Bloom, fruit: It blooms gradually from June to October. The blossoms grow singly or in groups. The corolla is pink or crimson. The sepals are persistent and remain on the spikes. They are large, spherical, glabrous and brick red. Inside they hide a thick pulp with seeds covered with trichomes. They ripen gradually. 

Interesting fact: Rose hips contain a lot of vitamin C. They are used for making jams, fruit wines and juices. The dried ones are suitable for tea.
