About project

Wood species are part of the natural environment and also part of urban, industrial and sports areas and shopping malls. They play an important role everywhere, both from the aesthetic and ecological point of view. They create green areas and linear elements. They provide not only shade, higher humidity and relaxing conditions, but also space for other organisms, whether they are migratory birds or insects, small mammals, reptiles and amphibians, or even organisms that live on the roots, trunks, branches or leaves of these wood species. Woody plants can also provide temporary shelter or food for various organisms.

Trees, shrubs, subshrubs and woody lianas, like other green plants, use solar energy to create organic substances in which they store this energy. During photosynthesis, they consume carbon dioxide and, as a by-product, they produce oxygen, which is important for all living organisms´ respiration.

Wood species are a significant phenomenon of Hradec Králové, which is associated with the existence of large park areas and green areas in varied locations, housing estates and private gardens. These wood species are interesting due to a high diversity of geographically native and non-native species and their cultivars, whose appearance, height, growth, blooms, fruits and leaves ensure attractiveness for visitors to these places throughout the year. All wood species provide countless ecosystem services. Parks are convenient for relaxation and smaller social events; they are a suitable place for meeting friends. Every visitor will find something interesting in them.

This popular educational publication offers colour photographs of selected wood species from specific locations in the city, it specifies the exact locations of these wood species, and it provides information about their origin, ecological requirements, and their connections with the history of our planet. It also warns of the danger of invasion of tree species, and it specifies the conditions under which these dangerous situations could occur. The publication includes short texts about significant parks or green areas, it does not ignore memorial trees and their protection. Aerial photos and images taken from drones allow us to look at specific locations from a bird’s eye view.

Well, come with us and have a look!
