Caucasian Wingnut (Pterocarya pterocarpa)

Walnut family, Juglandaceae 

Origin: the range from Caucasus to northern Iran 

Habitat in the original area: coastal and floodplain forests 

Habitus: A deciduous tree up to 20 metres tall, with dark grey bark. It often grows in multi-stemmed forms. 

Leaf: The leaves are composed of 11–25 leaflets with a serrated edge. They are expanded in the upper third and asymmetrical at the base. 

Bloom, fruit: The blossoms appear from April to May. Male catkins are densely packed, female ones are longer and the blossoms are placed further apart on the spindle. The fruiting bodies are pendulous and composed of several nuts with two bract-like wings.  

Interesting fact: Young twigs hide a scaly pith inside. The wood grows vigorously through root suckers and can form large stands.
