Deerhorn Cedar (Thujopsis dolabrata)

Origin: Japan

Habitat in the original area: mountain forests

Habitus: The tree with a conical crown growing to the maximum height of 30 metres. The red-brown bark is thin and peels off lengthwise. The twigs are strongly flattened and spread out flat.

Leaf: Scale-like leaves are pressed together, have a dark green and shiny pattern, which is white underneath. 

Bloom, fruit: Male cylindrical cones grow individually at the ends of the branches. Female cones are round. The seeds are flat and narrowly winged on both sides. 

Interesting fact: It has light and durable wood which is used for constructing of bridges and buildings and for furniture manufacturing. It can also be grown as a bonsai.
