Field Maple (Acer campestre)

Origin: Europe, therefore native to the Czech Republic, northern Africa, Asia Minor, Caucasus, Iran

Habitat in the original area: light forests, shrubs, country lanes 

Habitus: A tree growing up to the height of 15 metres; it has a richly branched spherical crown and a grey-brown cracked bark. 

Leaf: The petiolate leaves grow oppositely on the branches. The blade has 3–5 lobes, its individual lobes are rounded. The leaf is dark green on the upper side and yellow-green on the lower side.

Bloom, fruit: It blooms from April to May. Its yellow-green blossoms grow in panicles. The fruit is a winged, up to 4 cm long and horizontally distributed two-seeded achene.

Interesting fact: The plant is unpretentious, tolerates urban environments and pruning, therefore it is also suitable for hedges.
