Serbian Spruce (Picea omorika)

Pine family, Pinaceae

Origin: the valley of the Drina River (Bosnia, Serbia)

Habitat in the original area: calcareous northern slopes, at the altitudes from 800 to 1,500 metres above sea level

Habitus: A tree growing up to 30 metres with a narrow columnar crown and short branches.

List: The flattened needles are up to 2 centimetres long, bluntly pointed. They densely cover the twig. The upper side is dark green and shiny, there are two white stripes on the lower side.

Bloom, fruit: The cones are 3–6 centimetres long. First they turn purple, later they turn into a cinnamon colour.

Interesting fact: It also tolerates urban environments well and, thanks to its height, it is suitable for smaller spaces, which is why it is often planted in parks and gardens. It is protected by law in Serbia.
