Tuliptree (Liriodendron tulipifera)

Origin: the east of the U.S.A.

Habitat in the original area: deciduous forests, often in river valleys

Habitus: It grows to the height of 40 metres. The bark is grey-brown and smooth when young, later furrowed and black. 

Leaf: Light green leaves are alternately arranged, with a long petiole and a square blade with 4–6 lobes.

Bloom, fruit: It blooms from May to June. The blooms resemble tulip flowers, are bell-shaped and up to 6 centimetres long, composed of 3 green calyx and 6 yellow corolla petals with an orange stripe. The fruits are winged achenes stored in a cone. 

Interesting facts: In the USA, this species is grown as a light-loving commercial tree.
